You may not think that you really need to care for your windows in the wintertime; however, there are things you can do to them to help reduce your heating bill. If you are struggling with keeping your heating bills at bay this winter, try some of these tips.
Inspect Windows Regularly
When was the last time you inspected your windows? Walk around your house and inspect them. Do the following for each window:
1. Test to make sure it opens and closes properly, with no difficulties.
2. Check the glass to make sure there are no cracks or gaps between the window and the frame.
3. Hold a candle in front of each window and if the flame flickers, there is a leak and that should be taken care of right away. (Continue reading to learn how.)
Washing Your Windows
You may not think about it but keeping your windows clean can help prolong their life. By not cleaning them, dirt and debris get trapped in the seals which then prevents them from forming a tight seal around the window frame. If there isn’t a tight seal, that leaves a spot for the frigid winter air to get through.
Caulk or Weather Strip Your Windows
Did you test your windows with a candle and find a leak? Sometimes these can easily be fixed by caulking or adding weather stripping around your window.
If the issue requires more work than just adding caulk or weather stripping, you may need new windows. At Window Mania, we can install the most energy-efficient windows into your home. Until we are able to install your new windows, take a heavy blanket and cover the widow to reduce the leaks.
Add Fixtures
Curtains, shades, and blinds are all great examples of what you can add as DIY insulators! If you have windows that don’t have any type of fixture, consider adding some.
Keeping energy bills at bay is always something people try to do during the winter months. By following these few tips, you can help save money each month. If you are in need of new windows, give us a call today and schedule your window consultation.
